During the 2020–2021 pandemic period, the provincial government suspended eviction enforcement for most grounds, with exceptions for serious safety issues. This resulted in many cases where tenants stopped paying rent knowing enforcement was paused. The accumulated arrears from this period are part of the LTB backlog still being worked through.

The LTB has undergone significant changes since 2022, including increased use of video hearings, online filing systems, and changes to adjudicator scheduling to address the backlog. While timelines have improved from their worst-case pandemic lows, they remain longer than the statutory timelines set out in the RTA.
